Sogetsu was founded by Sofu Teshigahara in 1927. Sofu's father was an Ikebana master, who taught his son from childhood. Sofu wanted to become a painter, but he found that the possibilities for creative expression in using green materials are endless, just as in painting. Sofu Teshigahara, at a very young age was nick-named “Little Teacher”, and it seems that he embodied a life-long leadership role in Japan’s post-war culture. In rapidly changing times, Teshigahara engaged his considerable gifts in the visual arts to adapt intrinsically Japanese aesthetics with vigor into his work, reflecting a more globalized condition.

Having watched the documentary Teshigahara and Abe yesterday, filmed for the Criterion Collection in 2007, I was looking forward to watching this film because Teshigahara’s father, Sofu Teshigahara, had created a new style of ikebana in 1927 when he founded the Sogetsu-ryu school, of which Teshigahara would eventually become the Grand Master in 1980.
